An economic think-tank has called on the Government to abolish VAT exemptions. At the moment, there's no VAT charged on non-luxury foods, children's clothing or household gas and electricity. The right-leaning Reform Group says if there was, then it would raise more than 8 billion pounds a year to help pay off our debt. They say it would be better than raising National Insurance and the top rate of income tax. Between 50 and 60 per cent of what the average household buys includes a VAT levy. Value Added Tax returned to 17.5 per cent in the New Year. It was reduced to 15 per cent in December 2008.
